Orthognathic (Jaw) Surgery

On some occasions, when the teeth do not meet correctly and there is an under or overbite, surgery is required to realign the jaws. This will then achieve a permanent functional and cosmetically pleasing result.  In most cases, patients will require orthodontic treatment (braces) 12 months prior to surgery to ensure their teeth meet correctly when the operation is performed. The procedure may involve the upper or lower jaw and occasionally both jaws and a 3D computer analysis is often employed to make the final assessment.

Preparing for Surgery

When you are ready for surgery, our staff will coordinate your hospital booking and provide you will all the necessary information. This information will include your fasting and admissions document, anaesthetists  information, quote and pre and post operative information.

Dr Chahoud performs this procedure routinely at Brisbane Private Hospital and as it is major surgery a three day stay in hospital is often required.  You may require two to four weeks of recovery time depending on the nature of the surgery and the demands of your work or study commitments.

After Surgery

You will be reviewed by Dr Chahoud on a weekly basis following your operation and referred back to your orthodontist four weeks after surgery for final straightening of your teeth.

We have prepared your Post Operative Instructions here.

It is important that you follow these instructions for the quickest and smoothest of recoveries with minimal pain and risk of infection.

Maintaining a nutrient rich diet post surgery will aid in a quick recovery with less risk of infection.

We have prepared a Recommended Food List here.

Please contact our experienced staff  before or after surgery with and any questions or concerns that you may have.
