Before Anaesthesia

Before General Anaesthetic Procedures

Two weeks prior to surgery, you will receive an email  from us outlining all necessary information required for your surgery. This will include your Admission and Fasting document, Surgical Quotation, Anaesthetics Information and Hospital pre-registration. Please look out for this email and contact us if it has not been received.

Preparing for Surgery

  • Your hospital pre admission must be completed one week prior to surgery. We will have forwarded the link to you in your email pack or you can do it through our website by clicking on here
  • Please commence Colgate Savacol mouth rinse two days prior to surgery, three times daily. Dilute a 1:1 ratio with warm water. Savacol can be purchased from most pharmacies and supermarkets and is necessary for optimum mouth health and recovery before and after surgery.
  • Ensure you have facial ice packs ready for after surgery care. These can be purchased at any pharmacy.
  • You must not have anything to eat or drink 6 hours prior to surgery. Please see your Admission and Fasting document that were emailed to you 2 weeks prior to surgery for fasting times.
  • Contact lenses, jewellery, nail polish and dentures must be removed at the time of surgery.
  • Do not wear excessive makeup on the day of surgery
  • If you have an illness such as a cold, sore throat, stomach or bowel upset, please notify the office.
  • You will be in hospital for approximately 5-6 hours
  • Please present to the admissions desk at the hospital, at the time designated on your Fasting and Admissions document
  • After you have been processed with Admissions, you will be called for an interview with your anaesthetist
  • Dr Chahoud will give you a prescription for antibiotics and pain relief on the day of surgery and this will be dispensed by the hospital pharmacy on the day of surgery.
  • You must be accompanied home and cared for by a responsible adult after your surgery. The hospital will not allow you to leave by taxi or uber.
  • You are not to operate a vehicle or sign any legal documents for 24 hours after surgery

** These instructions are for routine surgical patients. If you are a trauma or reconstructive jaw patient, your care will be offered on an individual basis with our nurse.
